One thing we already know is how this current age will come to an end, for the Bible states that “the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be discovered. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found spotless and blameless by Him, at peace, and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you,” (2 Peter 3:10-15, NASB).
So, if we know how the world will come to an end, what does this mean for how we should now live? Yes, we should have concern and take action regarding the potential impact of humans on the environment and the negative consequences of being irresponsible in our stewardship, because God gave humans the responsibility to “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth (Genesis 1:28).” So as stewards we should take care of the land, sea and sky. However, we know that the earth will not come to an end because of climate change. And our primary energy and actions should not be related to the environment, but our first focus should be on the fact that there is coming a day of judgement as described by John in the book of Revelation: “Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them; and they were judged, each one of them according to their deeds. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:11-15).
In the end we will be judged by our priorities and whether or not we have first placed our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. And when our priorities are in order the Bible is clear on how we should now live. “And the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all people, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously, and in a godly manner in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, eager for good deeds” (Titus 2:11-14). How would your life be different if by the grace of God, you took a true inventory of how you now live, and to commit to the Lord all that you do, and to rid yourself of those things that are ungodly and worldly, and to live a righteous life pleasing to God?
Commit your works to the Lord, and your plans will be established (Psalm 16:3).
